Reflections on My Conversation with Marc Dardenne – Insights on Leadership, Mentorship, and the Future of Hospitality
How a week back in the classroom sparked fresh perspectives on leadership, legacy, and lifelong learning
As the host of The Social Hotelier Podcast, I have the privilege of speaking with some of the most influential voices in the hospitality industry. Recently, I had the pleasure of reconnecting with Marc Dardenne, the CEO of Modon Hospitality in Abu Dhabi. Marc is not just a leader with decades of experience, but also a seasoned mentor who has dedicated a significant part of his career to inspiring the next generation of hospitality professionals.
During our conversation, Marc reflected on his recent return to his alma mater, the Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne (EHL), where he spent a week as a guest lecturer. For Marc, this experience was more than just a return to familiar halls – it was a powerful reminder of the importance of giving back. As he dug through old boxes to find his diploma, Marc realized that 43 years had passed since his own graduation. That moment, he said, was a poignant reminder of the journey he has taken and the responsibility he feels to guide those just starting theirs.
Marc emphasized that his teaching approach goes beyond textbook knowledge. In today’s digital-first world, he believes that the most valuable lessons are those drawn from real-life experiences – the wins, the losses, and the pivotal moments that shape a career. He shared how he brought in industry heavyweights like Simon Kasson, president of Corinthia and former president of Four Seasons, to speak with his students. These leaders shared their own stories of humble beginnings and hard-earned success, providing a real-world perspective that can’t be found in a classroom alone.
One of the standout themes from our discussion was the value of building meaningful professional relationships. Marc spoke passionately about the importance of surrounding yourself with mentors and learning from every interaction. He reflected on how his own network has been a cornerstone of his success, not just in advancing his career but in staying grounded and inspired throughout the decades.
We also touched on the critical role of authenticity in leadership. Marc has worked across continents, from Europe to the Middle East, and has seen firsthand how the ability to connect on a human level can make or break a leader. He shared his belief that great leaders are those who listen, who empathize, and who lead by example. In his view, leadership is not about leaving a personal legacy, but about inspiring others to reach their full potential and thrive in a demanding industry.
As we wrapped up our conversation, I asked Marc about his hopes for the future. His response was both humble and inspiring. For Marc, success is not about personal accolades or recognition, but about helping the next generation of leaders find their path in hospitality. It’s about giving back to an industry that has given him so much.
